Feathers Trumpets A Story of Hildegard of Bingen Joyce Ray Lisa Greenleaf Books

My church decided to use this book for a book club read, so I picked up a copy. Joyce Ray is a member and the author, so worked well. This is not a book that I would have bought just seeing it on the shelf, but really enjoyed it. I think it would be historic fiction. There are people and parts that are historic, but bits added to make connections when needed. The facts vs. added parts are explained at the end of the book. It is a quick, fairly light read, just a couple nights and I finished it off, but did leave me wanting to learn more.

Feathers Trumpets A Story of Hildegard of Bingen Joyce Ray Lisa Greenleaf Books Reviews

This is a beautifully written story where you find yourself caring deeply for a young girl who finds strength in her struggles as she overcomes obstacles we can't even imagine to become an absolutely amazing woman. I look forward to reading anything else Joyce Ray happens to write.
Too often the middle ages are represented by knights and their escapades. Feathers and Trumpets looks into the lives of nuns during the middle ages. These nuns were the real backbone of the church then, now and hopefully more so in the future. The young women that became nuns not only had leaps of faith as they entered their vocation but with insight mentoring they found their callings. Hildegard fought the status quo and allowed her blessing-visions to be received and transmitted for the greater good.. We all have a calling and we often don't heed the call.

I applaud Joyce Ray for being the vehicle to tell and translate Hildegard's lives work. I value the nuns in my earlier days more so now.
I read Feathers and Trumpets in one sitting over the Easter holiday. It is a story of Hildegard who was 'given' to a life she did not choose, and her journey of surrender and hope. Joyce Ray tells her story sensitively, showing Hildegard's growth from young girl to independent, strong woman. This is a heroine journey which will appeal to young readers even though the medieval setting is very different from their lives today. Ray's use of language to describe her scenes is breathtaking at times. The images of geese, plants and her surroundings call the reader into Hildegard's experiences so that we can live them with her. I would highly recommend this book to both young readers and adults.
Feathers and Trumpets grabbed my attention from the first page. I was drawn into an unfamiliar world, where a girl could choose to be bricked into a small room for life or could be put to death for her visions. Each detail Joyce Ray chose to include highlights many different parts of life during the 12th century – from food to courtship, music to medicine, rituals to the power of the Catholic Church.
Historical records left by and about Hildegard’s life presented her gifts through a religious lens. Ray used many of these primary sources to create a real person who struggled with her doubts, desires and her place in the 12th century. Though I am not a Catholic, I was fascinated by this woman, whose mark in the world is still felt today.
Greenleaf’s drawings are scattered throughout the book, creating another dimension for the reader to savor. And who can resist picking up a book with such an intriguing and beautiful cover?
I am reading Feathers and Trumpets for a second time, savoring Ray’s well-crafted writing and gaining further insight into a truly remarkable woman.
I would recommend this book to people of all ages, including teenage girls.
What an amazing amount of research must have gone into this beautifully written historical novel of a long life of devotion. I knew nothing about Hildegard before reading Feathers & Trumpets and found it refreshing to discover this fascinating woman from long ago. Her peaceful ritual-laden life is so unique in comparison to most of us of today who are caught up in multitasking and overstimulation. I sometimes find it difficult to concentrate on one task at a time, whereas Hildegard had one clear focus from childhood all the way into her eighties. Ray’s strong descriptions bring Hildegard to life and keep the reader firmly rooted in the 12th century. Pencil drawings throughout the story are an added bonus.
Feathers and Trumpets is a fictionalized biography of medieval church figure Hildegard of Bingen. Steeped in diligent and painstaking research, Joyce Ray brings to life for young readers the life of this most unusual woman in medieval times. Dialogue and writing style are fitting for the time period and the religious context. Hildegarde's life is followed from her famiy's giving her over to the church, through her years confined to an "anchorage" and on through her rise to regional fame because of the nature of her prophetic visions. This story will be of interest to readers who enjoy learning about the lives of women in earlier times, those interested in Christian history, and those who simply would like an unusual, well written, most enjoyable story. (Hildegarde was finally canonized in 2014).
This is an excellent well written book that gives insight to the way of thinking during the Middle Ages.
