I think this was free and for free it was pretty good. Not an exciting read, but slower and a little drawn out. Sometimes you need one of those. A few reviewers said that they didn't like how the h was portrayed and I tend to agree with that(unmotivated, no a lot of personality). The H definitely was the better character to read about. Overall I would recommend.Tags : Waking Up (Mills & Boon romance) [Amanda Carpenter] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Amanda Carpenter,Waking Up (Mills & Boon romance),Harlequin Mills & Boon,0263753484,Fiction,Romance

Just reread this book after many many years. It's a friends to lovers book and it is unusual as the H is not that experienced with women and yet it does not detract from his otherwise hotness.
The h is a little wishy washy but it has an awesome ending that I just loved. A keeper!
I thought it was ok especially since I downloaded it free. There were some loose ends and confustion such as Jason's girlfriend Linda and Robbies boyfriend Ira. What happened to them? Jason and Robbie were friends since they were children. They teased, played, fought and then they grew up and apart. Roberta (Robbie) is now a waitress in one of the local restaurants. She makes a decent income banking most of it since she lives free with her widowed dad Herb. Jason is now a successful businessman living/working in a closeby town. Jason comes to town to housesit for his parents who live next door and all they seem to do throughout this book is nit pick at eachother. She feels that he is above her because of his success and their friendship is suffering. He feels she is wasting herself by not getting an education. Strange feelings for him are surfacing and Robbie is confused with them. It's obvious that if they would just communicate with eachother that many issues would be cleared up but then again it wouldn't be a romance novel if that were to happen. I didn't care much for the title it could have been a more captivating one. Had I had to pay for this one I would have been satisfied if I spent no more than $3 on it. I hope you enjoy...happy reading.
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!!!!One of the interesting points in all this is that both Jason and Robbie are innocents, the intimate encounters are tastefully presented.
Summary From Book
Something was happening to their friendship ...Robbie Fisher had always been a couple of years and a few changes behind her neighbor, Jason Morrow. Still, he'd lent an ear to all her dreams and troubles right up to the time he'd left for university. Now he was back in Cincinnati, looking after his parents' home for the summer. But Robbie no longer felt comfortable confiding in him. He was the man with the golden future, while hers was still in question. What could he be to her now? Stranger, big brother, friend or something disturbingly new? It was a dilemma Robbie could discuss with no one--Jason least of all!
If you’re feeling nostalgic for the eighties‒big hair, leg warmers, acid-washed jeans and all‒and you like friends-to-lovers stories, then Waking Up, a Retro Romance from 1986, might be just what you’re looking for.
The story begins with the heroine, Robbie, defending her lack of direction in life. She’s twenty-two years old, never went to college, and works as a waitress. Her childhood friend Jason, a successful businessman who has recently moved back home, is prodding her to do something with her life, but Robbie says she has to do things in her own time. That beginning really resonated with me. I remember being a directionless twenty-something and how difficult that was, and I was looking forward to Robbie’s journey of self-discovery. Unfortunately, rather than chronicling that journey, the story moves from one commonplace scene to the next as Robbie slowly realizes that Jason is no longer just her pal next door. The romance is the point of the story, of course, but it is played out against a backdrop of Robbie’s evening shifts at the restaurant, her housecleaning chores in the home she shares with her father, and lazy afternoons spent working on her tan. Not much scope for interesting character growth there.
Equally problematic for me, is that Jason is more old-school hero than I am comfortable with. He’s sometimes violent toward Robbie, shaking and shoving her more than once “He held her by the shoulders and shook her steadfastly until she shouted in outrage.” He’s also a borderline stalker who stands outside her window at night and stares into her bedroom. And when she asks him to back off his aggressive sexual pursuit of her, he refuses to admit the fault and instead turns it on her “No. The conflict is all within yourself. You can’t place the blame on me for what you’re feeling.” For the most part, the author portrays Jason as a gentle, caring man who truly loves Robbie, but occasionally I thought his behavior crossed a line no hero should cross in any era.
Overall, though, the story is well-written and a quick read, but I would have liked it much better if Jason had been less menacing and if the novel had been as much about Robbie’s personal journey as her romantic one. But if you like your retro heroes with a touch of machismo, and this frozen winter has you longing for a story that brings hot-shouldered summer to life, Waking Up might just be the book for you.

This one is a little dated (the names, technology, word choice etc) but the story holds up nicely. Jason is sweet and his feelings are very intense (the author waxes lyrical about the violence of his passion a bit too much). Robbie was snarky and level headed which I found fun. She was confused and had a hard time reconciling the boy she knew with the man he had become, which made sense. Jason had years to get comfortable with his feelings, the evolution of their relationship is sudden for Robbie. Linda and Ian were so unnecessary that she was only ever spoken of and he disappeared for long stretches without being missed. I give it 3.5 stars.
