Legend of the Highland Dragon Highland Dragons Isabel Cooper 9781402284670 Books

The leads are both likable and worthy of respect, and their relationship grows realistically as they learn more about each other. Mina is pragmatic, but when faced with magic, she accepts the evidence of her senses, and meets new challenges with courage -- I hate when authors subject us to pages and pages of denial that just make a character look like a fool.
The writing is smooth, and has a pleasing bit of humor here and there, though the tone isn't one of laugh-out-loud comedy. There is sexual content, but both have considered possible consequences before allowing themselves to act on their attraction. The ending felt a bit quick, but I don't know that any more was actually needed.
I trust brother Colin's story will be just as enjoyable a read.

Legend of the Highland Dragon Highland Dragons Isabel Cooper 9781402284670 Books Reviews

I never thought I would get into reading a book about dragon shifters, until I started this book. I bought it because I had agreed to review the third book in this series, and wasn’t sure if they were stand alone books or not. Turns out this book could stand alone, although the second one features a character from this one. Also, turns out that I liked it enough that I want to read the second one.

London at the end of the 1800’s is not exactly conductive to a young woman finding a good job. Mina grew up near the East End of London-which is pretty much the slums. Her family is poor but makes do, more then most. She is working for a professor scholar as a secretary when Lord Stephen MacAlasdair, walks in the door. She manages to get sucked into his, and the professor’s problems, one of which is deadly. Because she sees Stephen in his dragon form one night(while she is being attacked) and because of the dangerous problem he is trying to take care of, he can’t let her leave his house. Truly scandalous for that era. He offers her what amounts to four years salary to stay as his secretary, she just can’t leave because of the danger involved.

Mina was a good character. I wasn’t sure at the beginning that I would like her, because to be honest I first thought she was too nosy for her own good, and pretty brazen. Before the book was over, I was totally won over by her. Smart, capable, extremely brave, fiercely loyal, and ambitious for a better life, were all ways to describe her as the book went on. Stephen is a couple of centuries old, super handsome, truly dislikes being in London as his home is in Scotland, and he definitely has never met anyone like Mina in all those years. It’s not long before he is spending way more time with Mina then is necessary. Of course it helps that they are in the middle of trying to find a murderer-one that is out to kill Stephen, the professor, and the further the story goes, even Mina.

This story is full of mystery, demons, a horrible villain that uses equally horrible magic, and of course a romance. And as far as romances go, it was pretty great actually. I enjoy a slow burn romance a lot more then love at first sight, so this didn’t disappoint. While this wasn’t a bodice ripper, there is plenty of sexual chemistry, and there is a sweet(and actually fairly hot) scene of a sexual nature, so I would consider it an adult read. The pace fit the time period, not super fast, but with enough action that it kept me engaged throughout. I thought it was well written, and I completely enjoyed the whole thing.(RabidReads.com)
This is a fun Victorian paranormal. The characters are well fleshed out and the story keep me very entertained. Mina is intelligent, amusing, and brave; she is an admirable heroine in long skirts. Stephen is appealing as well and I enjoyed their story and look forward to the next in the series.
I like a good Dragon book occasionally and I got it. Liked the characters and the plot of this book. Wished there was a bit more in the end.
Mina and Stephen are really meant for each other. Not much scares Mina off the course that she sets for herself. Stephen has his Dragon to make happy and Mina seems to do that. They work together very well. She was willing to give her life for him and he in turn felt the same way. Great story..
I liked the strong woman and the man who appreciated her individuality and ability to be a full partner, especially considering it took place in ? 1800 England. It had a bit of everything, truly unique story line. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because it didn't move fast enough... just a sleight drag. I will look for other books by her in this vein.
There was some confusion for me on the era at first, Edwardian, Victorian, etc... Chemistry was quite lacking between Stephen & Mina. I'm giving it 3 stars because I really like the idea of it. Needs to be a bit more gritty and in your face in all aspects of the writing for it to be a really good Paranormal Romance. IMHO, it need much, much more heat between the H/H. I'll give the 2nd book, [book The Highland Dragon's Lady] a chance. Colin seemed to be a wonderfully cocky gent in Book #1, I hope his book (#2) is much more daring.
The concept is certainly intriguing, and I love dragon shifter novels. The style of writing was very elegant, and I quite enjoyed it.

Mina is a really interesting female lead. She is intelligent, strong, and beautiful. Most heroines are as such, but there was something different about Mina. She was never the meek somewhat confused girl that most romances start out with. From the get go she is fiery and independent, and definitely not afraid to go two to two with a man as intimidating as Steven, the male lead. I really liked that, and it was especially nice considering that it was set in what I'm guessing was Victorian London when women had very little independence or opportunities.

There's nothing really out of the ordinary for Steven as far as character goes. He's definitely not a bad boy as many romance novels tend to be about. In fact, Steven is very chivalrous, some times even boringly so.

My main issue with the book is that it seemed to drag too much, and it took far too long, after the initial action, for anything of real interest to occur.

But all in all I think it was an excellent read, and one of my favorites as far as dragon shifters go.
