The Eighty-Five Billion Euro Man is a hard-hitting satire of Ireland's EU IMF bailout and the Eurozone crisis by former Irish Times London Correspondent Donal Conaty. It takes a scathing swipe at the people untouched by austerity Ireland. The politicians, the senior civil servants, the bankers and the trade union officials.
Walk into the Department of Finance in Dublin with €85 billion and you won't have it for long. Not when Dermot Mulhearn a career civil servant with a taste for the finer things in life is wondering where his next meal ticket is coming from.
As Ireland is rocked by the EU IMF bailout conditions and the austerity measures that follow it Dermot still has a twinkle in his eye. Why should he care about the Irish banking crisis? He's the man who pulls the strings on Ireland's puppet politicians. So what if Brian Cowen's government is all washed up? Dermot is more than a match for the incoming glimmer twins Michael Noonan and Brendan Howlin. As for Enda Kenny? The new Taoiseach couldn't go a day without asking Dermot for advice.
So, as the economy continues to nosedive and the grim realities of austerity in bailout Ireland become apparent Dermot leads a charmed life. He accepts tributes from bankers as though he were Don Corleone in The Godfather and he steers the ship of State wherever he feels like going.
So what if Ireland defaults? Angela Merkel can deal with the consequences. Dermot has more pressing concerns like distributing Six Nations tickets to his buddies or sourcing nurofen plus and in-flight magazines for a bizarre wake in memory of Leslie Nielsen.
Stuck with trying to manage Ireland's bailout fund and prevent Dermot from blowing it on fast cars, wild parties and fake tans is an anonymous accountant with the IMF. This is his harrowing tale. It would be serious if it wasn't so funny.

I live in Ireland but am not Irish so I was a wasn't sure how much of the book's many inside jokes I'd actually get. Five pages in, I knew I'd not only be OK, but would have a great read. Without ever being mean, the author pokes fun at pretty much everyone and everything in Ireland. The book is jammed with recognisable faces, places, habits, scandals and little things of life, and each and everyone of them is presented in a way that'll shed a little light on things you never really paid much attention to before. If you're Irish, live in Ireland, or simply want a surreal trip into the big problems and little quirks of the Green Isle, you HAVE to read this book. It's full of great laughs that'll tickle your smart bone and make you wonder if, after all, this isn't exactly what happened.

A very funny read which moves along at a fast pace, at the end of the book you are wondering if it is true
Picked it up and could not leave it down, its a great read with punchlines in every paragraph. Its a tonic for all of us suffering Irish. Like all good comedy its the fact that it is so close to the truth. Its is totally believable and a great read.
And now I'm hooked on the writers blog themire.net, for my daily fix of Mr Conaty's humour.
Looking forward to the sequel.
This is an excellent representation of what may well have been happening in the background while the government and their officials 'dealt' with the economic and banking crisis in Ireland. The characters are appealing and likeable and the reader will find themselves empathising with their real-life counterparts on completion of the book. It will leave the reader wishing that the participants in the story were more like this in the real world, and, maybe they are. Dermot Mulhern feels familiar to the reader throughout. Satire at it's best and a highly recommended read.
This book is frightning as I guess there is a lot of truth in this fiction A great read not putdownable
If your in Ireland at the moment there is nothing much left to do but have a laugh. This book had me on the floor...)
