This was my first exposure to the detective Leo Waterman and it was an relatively enjoyable read. The best thing about the author G. M. Ford, in my opinion, is his caustic, sardonic humor, which I happen to like. I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second, as it got a bit confusing near the end and I lost track of some of the characters when there were 20 or so involved at once. Perhaps that was because I read it during a hectic week or week and a half, whereas I usually go from cover to cover in a day or two with mysteries. I have two more of Ford's books in my Kindle, and I will give them a shot soon (no pun intended).Tags : The Deader the Better: A Leo Waterman Mystery (Leo Waterman Mysteries) [G.M. The Deader the Better A Leo Waterman Mystery Leo Waterman Mysteries GM Ford 9780380804207 Books Reviews
I love Leo! He may be a bit juvenile, but in ways that many of us wish we could also be. He's also capable, smart and funny but with a keen sense of justice.
G.M. Ford is an amazing author whose characters and plot twists keep you turning pages. His characters, Leo, Rebecca, the 'boys' are all imperfect in ways that only make the story interesting. His plots are convoluted and keep you guessing.
Great book. Good series.
His books always are slow to get going but, once they get rolling the action never slows down. My only hang up is with the author who should know more about what he writes. Firearms in particular since they are a big part of his stories. Glocks do not have a conventional safety that you must disengage before you can shoot. It's simple when you want to shoot you just pull the trigger nothing else is necessary. Otherwise a very good story.
I'll say again that G M Ford (really?) is quickly becoming my favorite author. Great character development for Leo Waterman- both his personal and professional side. Great story with a bevy of unbelievable but believable players in the game of hide and seek.
This is the most challengingly complex plot that I have seen in the Waterman series. The warp and weft of seemingly disparate elements come together by the end of the novel in a way that made me appreciate the multi-layered plot. I can't say this is my favorite Leo Waterman novel as a few of the character interactions appear to be extraneous plot branches that serve to color the story but remain incrementally unimportant. The disposition of Hand and Russell appeared a bit contrived and likely to lead to future discovery due to inadequate "disposal".
G.M. Ford is a creative writer. Leo Waterman is a flawed, but likable fellow who has great adventures. Accepting the premise of this book required giving the author literary license a lot of the time, but in the end, his posse of alcoholics provide a fun romp to offset the more sinister aspects of the story. Leo's relationship with his long time girlfriend is complex and believable, and helps to make Leo into a real character. You can read these books one after the other, or you can pick them up over time. I have always enjoyed meeting everyone again in each of these books starring Leo Waterman and his merry band of drunks.
Love this series. The underplayed sense of humor and the "boys" keep a fun plot going book-to-book. I like having the characters come back and seeing what they are up to now. His use of little details make you pay attention because you know it's going to be used later in the book and you sort of wonder what purpose it's going to serve. Nice little hooks.
I'm working on filling in the missing books in series. Which brings up an important point. With this series you aren't lost if you didn't read the last book. Some series you need to keep them order to prevent missing details mentioned going forward. This is nicely crafted.
I actually disapprove of old guys who are drunk almost all of the time. So why do Leo Waterman's compatriots amuse me so? Leo is himself a master of planning and (at this later stage of his life) rational in his outlook but his Dad's old buds are something else again an ensemble of hopeless bums but so darn helpful in unraveling mysteries. In The Deader they are joined by some seriously violent guys and really capable techies, which I greatly enjoyed. One thing about Ford's Leo books -- Leo is in his own way just as outside the law as the baddies he chases. I actually disapprove of that, too. Oh, well. It's only a novel.
