Up until I read Richard Nixon The Life, I really didn’t know much about the man. I knew of him as being the Vice President for Eisenhower and the man who lost the 1960 Presidential election to JFK. Later he lost the California Governor’s race in 1962 and rebounded to win the Presidential election in both 1968 and 1972.

What the author John A. Farrell brings to the table is what made Richard Nixon tick. As the author explains in most of the scenarious of Nixon is that he was always paranoic and was not always outgoing and when things were not going his way he would be withdrawn and hence paranoic. We see a highly intelligent person who at times was very unsure of himself. Not being able to attend the elite universities on the East Coast not for lack of intelligence but for the lack of money.

Nixon was persuaded to enter politics in California as a U.S. congressman in 1946 and as they say the rest is history. Farrell details the Senate Race of 1950 Presidential election of 1952 earmarks his political successes as a young man. His dealing is masterfully detailed as to how Nixon proceeded in the Alger Hiss hearings. The author shows to us the first scandal that Nixon had to deal with when he was questioned on his financial dealings in the 1962 Presidential campaign. It shows a young Nixon utilizing the media of TV to give his famous Checker’s speech and redeeming himself on national TV.

Farrell shows an in depth look at Nixon’s relationship with Eisenhower. Not in all circumstances did Ike get along with his Vice President. Onto the 1960 Presidential election when the political fortunes of Dick Nixon began to change. With that Presidential loss came his loss in the 1962 California election. From there the author details Nixon’s political comeback. The triumph of the 1968 election and the landslide of 1972 election gave Nixon his nadir in the political arena.

With that said the tragedy of Watergate is discussed and shows to us an intelligent man who was quite excellent in dealing in foreign affairs but could not handle his paranoiac behavior and thus led him obstruct justice to the point that I actually felt sorry for Nixon.

Richard Nixon The Life by John A. Farrell is a broad and sweeping biography of the eighty plus year life of one of our most controversial presidents. The central question of any biography of Richard Nixon is how does a given author deal with the two faced nature of Richard Nixon. On one hand, he accomplished a great deal domestically and globally to create much of the world as we know it today. Yet, he was also a man insecure in his own right who played on voters’ darkest fears and prejudices to garner the votes, so that he could do those great things and this was before Watergate.

Farrell’s answer seems to be to position the two Nixon’s side by side existing at the same time. He played on the fear of communism when it suited him to win elections, yet would later give us arms control and an opening to China. He presided over a polarized and divided America that he had helped to divide. Richard Nixon was a very complex man and Farrell really captures the competing versions of him without doing tedious rhetorical gymnastics to justify or explain things.

A pretty fair trial of a complex figure.
I enjoy a well written biography especially those of person's I lived through events with. This book has given me a new perspective on how/ why Nixon lost the 1960 campaign. How the demographics of America shifted after WWII with the advent of air conditioning and the power of television. Issues Nixon faced still exist unresolved today. One minor mistake is the captioning of photos of Halderman and Ehrlichman. I came of age in the 1960's and this book brings it all back in focus with insights not available at the time. Nixon's relations with the press are uncomfortably similar to today's headlines. I believe time will be kinder to Nixon once more of his achievements are documented in books such as this. Such a complex person deserves fair biographies like this one. It is all in there the good, the bad and the what if's.
Farrell's book brings fresh insight to the character of Nixon the man and his development over the years. For much of the work, the author takes pains to make us understand how this fragile, determined, sensitive, and tough man rose so far and why he was willing to sacrifice so much to do so. I've read a lot of books on Nixon, and this one does a better job than most of capturing the character of the man. My one reservation is that much of that empathy and searching drops from the text during the Presidential years.

That one caveat aside, I think this book is worth the time of those interested in Nixon, the Presidents, or the 20th century in general.
I am an avid reader of Nixon biographies having read all of Stephen Ambrose's trilogy, Roger Morris (hatchet job), Herb Parmet and more. First new biography on Nixon in many years and it was a winner. Well written with great new history and insights. Couldn't put it down. Despite what your feelings are on Nixon, he is still one of the most remarkable figures in American history. His life is truly an example of life being stranger than fiction. This was a fascinating account of a troubled, polarizing yet innately American persona. Strongest recommendation.
One of the most wrenching, sympathetic biographies I've ever read. A profoundly insightful and human portrait of a great president and human being whose troubled upbringing and personality traits led him to a political and psychological corner. As someone who finds Nixon more interesting, intelligent and admirable than most authors paint him I was surprised at the clear-minded and altogether human picture presented in this biography. The first one hundred pages describing Nixon's childhood almost brought me to tears. In my opinion far better and more compelling - and informative - than even Caro.
