The Unwritten Vol 11 Apocalypse Mike Carey Peter Gross Books

Here we are at the end of this acclaimed Vertigo title. It's been a long and crazy ride to get here. After reading through all the titles for the Unwritten and this volume in particular, I can definitely say that this was worth the read.

Let's get into the details. Leviathan is near death, and Tom has only one option to save it: The Holy Grail. It's a quest out of Arthurian Legend, and it's one of the highlights of the entire series. The art style switches to the style of a classical painting, and it's astonishing to look at. All of the old subplots come together, and the ending is...quite something, and that's all I'm going to say.

In the end, I give this entire series 4.3 stars.

The Unwritten Vol 11 Apocalypse Mike Carey Peter Gross Books Reviews

It's always sad to say goodbye to one of your favorite series but at least this was a thoroughly satisfying end.
In my opinion, this is one of the best comic book series ever. Above all else, it's about the power of stories, and there's just so much to like about it. I've been eagerly awaiting the conclusion, and it did not disappoint. Everything ties together nicely, every question that matters is answered, and it leaves you with a lot to think about.

Pretty much the only complaint I could make about the series (aside from the gratuitous and missable Fables crossover in volume 9, which in fairness was an enjoyable diversion) is that the art is pretty bland. Strong storytelling, and it never gets in the way of the writing-- which is the real star-- but it's rarely much to look at. And that's just a complaint I COULD make, but I'm not going to make it. It also gets off to a very slow start, which nearly prompted me to drop the book, but which enhanced the overall experience. If after the first volume you told me this would be one of my two or three favorite comics of all time, I'd have laughed in your face.

Buy it all (including Tommy Taylor and the Ship that Sank Twice, which is essential to the story and should be read around the same time as the aforementioned Fables crossover), read it from the start, and I don't know how you could be disappointed. It's like a love letter to stories, and it's unbelievably good. Highest possible recommendation.
You have to get them all, and read them sequentially. You CAN'T just jump in. That said, it's FANTASTIC. Think "if Neil Gaiman had written Harry Potter."
A satisfying, if somewhat sad, ending to the series.
Awesome series. Sorry to see it go. Just wanted to give it a 5* rating. Not much for writing reviews.
Such an unsatisfying conclusion to the series. Not for what specifically happened, but for the writers throwing out the last few rules remaining in their tale. They ignored rules rather firmly established earlier, introduced new possibilities that would have made it easy to avoid the ending as written, and tossed in any number of random, unexplained occurrences to force the conclusion they wanted. The closest I'll come to a spoiler is that, like in the Fables crossover, they simply negated much of the story that has happened up to now with a big reset button. But not everything, and what gets reset and what does not follows no apparent logic.

Really made me sorry I started reading the whole series, which up to this was pretty cool.
